Make the Most of Your Time at Home: Self-Care Tips and Ideas

Mother and Daughter Practicing Yoga in Their Battle Lake HomeIf this quarantine has got you stuck at home, don’t let the feeling of being cooped up get the best of you. Learn to keep those feelings at bay! More so if staying at home is a significant change from your previous routine, you may be resorting to unhealthy habits. But there is an alternative. If you focus on the things that you are no longer able to do now, you will end up frustrated. It would do you well to make the most of your time at home by creating a daily self-care routine. Many routines can be considered self-care. Here are a few tips and ideas from experts.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Nothing is better for your physical and emotional well-being than a good night’s sleep. If you are having a hard time sleeping, try creating a different evening routine. Before sleeping, engage in relaxing activities like walking or yoga. Avoid eating or drinking anything with caffeine or sugar in it. Map out a sleeping space that is far from any distractions. Make sure the television and cell phone are out of the bedroom and make the room as dark as you can. Also, go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time each day. It’s not a swift process. Give your body time to adjust. Eventually, you will notice the improvement in the quality of your sleep.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Spending all your time at home may increase unhealthy snacking, whether from boredom, stress, or other causes. Self-care can come in the form of eating a healthy diet that leads to good health. Be careful about what kind of foods you choose. Stick to the ones that have a positive impact on your health. Some of these are green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, and blueberries. Also, keep yourself hydrated by always drinking plenty of water.

Do Something Active Every Day

Let’s face it: exercise is good for us. Nevertheless, staying active isn’t just about punishing workouts or losing weight. When thinking about your daily self-care routine, integrate ideas that will encourage you to maintain healthy and frequent activity. If it’s allowed, go take a walk or ride a bike. If you prefer staying inside, you can dance to exercise music, clean the house, and play active video games – specifically the ones that require motion sensors! In this way, you can keep yourself healthy, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally, as well.

Do Something Creative

Take a break from your daily routine and allow yourself to enjoy a simple creative activity — sketching, writing a poem or learning a new instrument. This is a great routine for self-care. You don’t have to be the next big artist of the world to be able to feel the satisfaction of creating something in a way your know-how. There are so many ways to express your creative side. If painting, drawing, or creative writing won’t do it for you, then maybe something along the lines of crafts, sewing, or gardening will! Even designing future projects or rearranging furniture counts. As long as it’s something you genuinely enjoy doing, go for it.

Set Realistic Goals

Don’t overextend yourself, though. It isn’t self-care when you’re being too hard on yourself. You can be productive one step at a time, even if staying at home has disrupted your normal routines of productivity. As such, be realistic about what can be accomplished within a day. Start with easy tasks first, and move on to setting realistic goals to keep the motivation going.

Most of all, when staying at home, it’s important to make good self-care practices a priority. Schedule self-care activities just like you would an important business meeting, and guard that time mindfully. Thereby, you can maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind.
